There was a series of 10 films, released every few years from 1979 until 2002. Star Trek, though not primarily a film series, has undergone similar shifts. By the 1950s, the franchise was essentially gone, replaced with a franchise by British film-studio Hammer, which shared no continuity (story or tonal) with the Universal movies, and that too died off in the 1970s. They had crossovers between all of those, including crossovers with Abbot and Costello. They had Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy, the Wolf-Man. I watched every Marvel movie when it came out when I was a teenager.
That is a large investment of time and energy to be caught up. Even if three quarters of them are skippable, by the end of the decade that might be 15 or so `essential' movies to watch. By the end of the year there will be 30 MCU films within two years it's expected to be 40. Younger kids and people in general will not want to make the time commitment to watch old MCU movies in order to catch up. The rate at which they release new stuff is increasing, not decreasing. The first Iron Man movie came out when I was 7, and I have friends my age who are getting married.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is too big and too bloated.
